Let’s start off a fresh new feature here at Vintage Seattle called
School Days. This first installment is the basketball team from the 1930 edition of Queen Anne High School’s Kuay Annual Yearbook. I’m a bit of a collector of this school’s yearbooks, so forgive me if I borrow from it too much (why? I almost lived there… long story). So what can we lear
n? 1. Basketball uniforms used to be much more stylish.
2. Petterson was known for “hard checking” his man. Think he was on the hockey team too? 3. White left. 4. Elias Hamilton clearly illustrates that not much has changed in 77 years of basketball team managers.
Hard to say if he enjoyed being called a “roly-poly lad.” 5. In 1930, you needed exactly one manager for every 2 players.
Anything I missed?

Jess-
If you ever come across some of those vintage uni’s hook me up. I would love to be sporting them around town!
True, Galer was called “Dead Eye.” It was because he was such a good shot. Unfortunately, he actually DID have a dead eye and, in a Model T Ford driving along Lake Washington Boulevard, he missed a turn and crashed. He didn’t die though he did lose his other eye. From then on he was simply referred to as, “Galer , the Poor Ol’ Blind Duffer.”
My Grandfather, Felix Penso, went to QAHS in the early-mid 30′s. He was an avid baseball player and played on several minor league teams. If you ever have the chance, i would love to know if he is in any of the yearbooks you have. Thanks!
