The Seattle Stadium That Wasn’t

What if the Kingdome never existed? I was recently routing through some old city archives and found a few rather interesting documents. Being a big Seattle Mariners fan, these seem even more interesting.

It’s a 1963 proposal from the Cheney Construction Company (and associates) to the Central Association (who is now the Downtown Seattle Association) regarding a new 70,000 seat stadium to literally be built in Puget Sound. The stadium was to have a forward thinking retractable roof. Remember, this wasn’t realized in Seattle until 1999 with Safeco Field. For those keeping score at home, this was also 13 years before the Kingdome was built.

Page one of the proposal from Cheney Construction Company for the stadium to be located on Seattle’s central waterfront. This pages lists 75,000 seats while the overhead schematic shows 70,000. Page two of the proposal discussing cost and financing. Interestingly, the cost analysis seems to be coming *after* the proposal, nice! But a budget of $15 million is given as a, um, ballpark.

Overhead schematic showing baseball diamond and football field areas as well as seating levels. Map showing the location of the proposed stadium in relation to Seattle Center. The planners also wanted to connect the monorail to this facility.

Pencil sketch of the stadium. Imagine getting directly to a Mariners game by boat! Seattle Center and the Needle can be seen in the background.

Ah, yes, the one more chapter in The Future that Wasn’t. When the last monorail vote came down, I was seeing Jetson-esque monorail lines that took full advantage of the third dimension, dropping off spectators at the *top* of the stadiums or at least at club level ;-)

Ah, well. That kind of boldness is a thing of the past. Thanks for sharing this.

If that would have been built, Seattle may have received an AFL or NFL franchise by the end of the 60′s, and either the A’s or Braves may have moved there(my money is on the A’s because I heard that Finley was eyeing Seattle back then).

  9. I’ve to say that I concur using the sentiments about having AOL as range 1. The comments posted along side it sum it up properly, that it does nothing at all to strengthen the brand, but only adds confusion.Out of the most beneficial rebrands within the l ist, I’d set SyFy at the top rated. At first I hated the identify, mainly because I thought they did it ??just because,??? when in fact they’d to change their title because of currently being unable to legally use Sci-fi.??? Now somewhat than coming up that has a whole new title that nobody would know- and probably shed a whole lot of the already inbuilt SciFi??? brand- they caught with the outdated name which has a bit of word play. I can nevertheless call SyFy Sci-fi when it comes up, and that tends to make me content.

The whole level of [logo] layout just isn’t to show off??? what you are able to do. It isn’t about bells and wh istles. It can be that sort of contemplating which has a whole lot of existing designers applying gradients on every single design aspect as if they’d anything to try and do with v isual communication. The lion drawing does notneed any longer pol ishing. From the place I stand, It is at a level where it can ONLY be used or d iscarded. If you suppose it needs additional pol ishing ,that it truly is too cartoony??? , or you have styl istic objections together with the solution, then maybe you??? re within the improper occupation. You??? re complaining about a little something quite basic to modern graphic design. I’ve read from a few of the greats to the subject of style and I do feel I have a take care of on the topic. It is not your cope with, I comprehend that. What I do notunderstand is your layout philosophy. It will be popular which you believe Nike and Shell are great brands. Maybe you??? re an Global Style zealot who thinks a grid will be the solution to every last style issue. Maybe that is definitely what you meant by pol ished? Or maybe you??? re into a lot of pointless detail on the logo that should become no ise since it is shrunken down? I do notknow. My grammar is frequently wonderful, thank you for asking. It’s my spelling that was off in quite a few areas and for that, I apologize, but, you recognize, if my grammar was anywhere near as horrible as you declare then you??? d have had a tough time comprehending what I wrote. There can be next to nothing so that you can react to. I do notknow about you, however it is difficult for me to get indignant at gibber ish especially when I’ve no concept what it means.
