Let’s stick with that Seattle Center theme from last week and look once again at the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair aka Century 21 Exposition. The Fair opened April 21, 1962 and ran until October 21 of that same year and almost 10 million people attended during that time.

And did you know that President John Kennedy was scheduled to attend the Expo

but bowed out due to “a cold” (when in actuality he was knee deep in the Cuban Missile Crisis). Enough trivia though, let’s take a look at two vintage postcards from the Expo.

Dear Irene, We are at Christine’s, been to the fair today. It’s nice and very clean. Train was all the time late, makes planned tour off some. Going to Victoria tomorrow, I hope. Weather is very nice here. We are taking more time than we had planned, can’t get too tired, wishing you are well. Sorry I am slow and am not writing many cards. Love Mom

Mailing this from the Fairgrounds — it should bear a special postmark. This is our third day and already some things are being put off until tomorrow. So much to see and so many in our party. Cloudy and cool today. Love to all. Jane + Mom Alice’s 2nd letter came this AM.

Yikes, I never would’ve guessed that the Space Needle was at one time orange.

I shuold very happy if you send us a seattle world’s fair-fine art pavillon april-october,1962 catalog, because I know that the italian painter Alberto Burri was present with his work Sacco Grande cat. n.C135.
Thank you very much for your attention

I collect Century 21 memorabilia with special attention to the Space Needle at that time, before extra restaurants were added, rendering it almost ugly. Yes, the Needle was orange! I have a souvenir pen (still in the pkg)and its orange, too. The Needle was orange for a while after the fair, I live in Seattle and though I was only 2yrs old at the time, I remember it being orange for several years; if they’d painted it right after the Fair, I wouldn’t recall, so I know it was orange at least for a few years. I went to the Fair, but all I remember about it was the big globe at the entrance. Now the grounds are much different, they are having to remove things due to the high cost of upkeep and to make room for other, more “modern” things, I guess. I miss the Bubbleator! I have amassed quite a collection of Fair stuff, MANY Space Needle replicas and replica items; my favorite being the 12″ blond-wood pencil lathed to resemble the Needle; the top is very well-fashioned, with a circular stand where you place the pencil engraved with “Seattle World’s Fair 1962″ on it. I have several copies of the guidebook, and a World’s Fair Science coin, all the tall glasses along with a set still in plastic of paper placemats & coasters bearing the Century 21 logo and scenes. I love Century 21! :)
