Past Post: Smith Tower And Rainier 1930

October 26th, 2007 @ 12:23 am by Cliffe | Sorted Past Postborder
Last week we saw postcards of and from Smith Tower and this week’s vintage postcard is Smith Tower minus a few years. The venerable tower also shares the stage with Mount Rainier in this 1930 card on its way to Albany, Oregon. This 42-story Seattle landmark was the tallest building on the west coast when it was built in 1914 and remains the oldest skyscraper in the city. You can bet I’ll have more here at VS.org about the tower in the future. Anyone interested or planning on living in this building if/when it becomes a condo? For now, let’s take in this postcard. Click on the thumbnail for a high-res version.

Great tower building. Unlike anything I have seen. It is very unusual in a good way.

Didi, when you finally make it out to Seattle you’ve got to check out the Smith. It’s an original, that’s for sure. You’re coming west sooner rather than later, right?

Wow, our boy has a way with words. “Howdy!” That’s it, just “Howdy!”

LOL! Yes, Cliffe, I will be on the next train there. Forget grad school and my job or the fact that after paying the bills I have very little travel money left over. Seattle is a dream though. Years ago, I always wanted to visit here and after discovering I knew exactly why. Same thing with Portland. I have to get my butt to the west coast asap.

Can’t you see that saying “Howdy” was very descriptive for the sender? LOL!

These days, instead of “Howdy,” Robert probably could have just gone with “0mgHi2u!”

Some things regress, some thing progress.

True, true, at least Robert had the dignity to spell out a word even if it was just one word.

    Hi,

I’ve been searching all over the internet for a photograph that is almost identical to the postcard you have above. I’ve seen it in many offices framed, and was looking to purchase a copy for my home. Would you have any idea where I can locate this pictures, I’ve been searching for close to 9 months!

    Thanks,
    rob
