Past Post: First Methodist Church

Jenni Pertuset of the Open Book Blog sends along this postcard of First Methodist Church. As you may know, the church was saved last year and now the developer has unveiled plans for the adjacent skyscraper. Like it? Hate it? Regardless, Jenni writes:
Here’s another from our friend Nicky in Chicago.

Handwritten on the reverse: “April 20. 1915″

Printed:
“Pub by The Acmegraph Co., Chicago.”

Nice find. Does anyone know when the front stairs were changed to their current configuation, and why? I think it looks a lot better in the classic style above, and I’m hoping they restore that in the upcoming project.

  2. Ben Lukoff says:

Any idea what the building to the left is?

  3. Kevin says:

The stairs were revised when the City regraded 5th Avenue in the 1940 time period. Unless the City agrees to give back part of Fifth Avenue to allow the stairs to be replicated as shown, its not likely a similar solution will be accomplished.

There is no record of the building to the left in the historical report prepared by the City during the 1990′s landmark study.

  4. Sandy says:

The building to the left is a small hotel that was demolished when the 1950 church annex was added.
