Ye Not So Olde West Seattle Move

March 6th, 2008 @ 1:45 am by Cliffe | Sorted Photo Exposureborder
We are continuing to get settled in here at our new house in West Seattle. The unboxing is going slowly — very, very slowly. Everyone in the neighborhood and surrounding area has been super friendly. As the moving truck was being unloaded last weekend, I even got a visit from VS reader and contributor Richard P. Hill. Speaking of contributors… never one to stand still, Deran Ludd sends in these old photographs of J. E. Standley and his home in West Seattle. Standley was the owner of Ye Olde Curiosity Shop, opening the store in 1899. Thanks Deran. Click on the images for more resolution. Does anyone know if his house is still standing?

As I recall, Paul Dorpat reported it was in 2006:

“After “Daddy” Standley’s death in 1940, Totem Place was sold, and the teahouse survived for a few years more. Recently, Erik and Katie Wallen purchased the old Standley home. Erik’s mother, Anne Barnes, was for 25 years a favorite employee at the shop, and the shop’s recent publication “A Curious Alphabet, Amazing Oddities from A to Z!” is dedicated to her.”

Also, and you may wish to moderate this as the home’s residents might want not to have their address broadcast to the internets, Dorpat notes that home is on Palm Avenue, and Daddy’s handwriting in the caption to the second pic identifies it as located at the corner of California and Palm.

Palm is a short street, and in Googling this I noted that this MLS, 28019141 , is on Palm and currently on the market. I believe you have an expedition in your future, if you can stand any more house visits.

I think I was able to find it in Zillow, by just looking, as well. Have fun on the search!

The title of the shell postcard is not quite right. It should read “Shells From Every Sea…and One Fake Duck.”

Anyone out there remember that episode of The Brady Bunch when Cindy had to memorize an alliteration poem about sea shells by the sea shore? LOL! That’s what that first photo makes me want to recite.

Otherwise, this is a very lovely home.

Mike: Nice catch! I will have to get in touch with the realtor and see about a tour.

I disagree with the above mentioned MLS # identifying the home. I remember this home, closer to the intersection of Cal/Palm. on the market April 05. It’s front porch matches your archive photo perfectly. This listing is archived and I would be glad to send you more info under separate cover.

Lisa is right - it was on the market for a while and is a different house than the above MLS. I remember it - I just didn’t know at the time what its significance was. One of the MLS # for it is 25004644 - that was one of the later ones…
    very cool house:)
