Pioneer Square’s J&M Hotel Building

I do love those late 1800’s-era brick buildings down in Pioneer Square. The J&M Hotel Building, located at 1st Ave and S Washington St., was built right after the fire in 1889 for around 20 grand, with the third floor being added on in the early 1900’s. Like most buildings that went up during this time period, it features brick walls and an inner timber structure. No way was this one going to burn down and thank goodness for that. It has been a continuously operating bar and card room since the early 1900’s. Thank goodness for that too. Click on the thumbnails for a closer look. So what’s your favorite Pioneer Square building?

Very nice looking hotel, in a gritty transient sort of way. I mean the nicest gritty transient.

Hmm. I notice that the painting on the side of the building has been repainted and changed over the years, compared to the version of it that I photographed in 1982:

The clouds are different, the typeface at the bottom has changed, etc. (Can’t tell about the color because mine was sepia-toned and hand-colored.) But at least they keep repainting the sign. I wonder when it first appeared.

Litlnemo, nice photo! Do you have any other old pictures of Seattle area buildings? Interesting to see how the painting has changed.

Thanks! I have other pics around somewhere, but they aren’t scanned and uploaded yet. Eventually I will get around to it.
