Just a quick follow-up on last week’s discussion of a 1914 Queen Anne High School playfield photo. I did some digging and it looks like

my initial thought that the field was to the south of the school along 2nd/3 rd and Highland is most likely wrong.

Though the pictures are from more than a decade later, they give us a good idea of what this area looked like.

Kuay Annual (QAHS yearbook) showing construction of the auditorium, which was just behind the original structure to the south (where the fountain is now). In addition, the yearbook these images were scanned from was owned by Custer Chappell (pictured below), who was a successful track star at the school. He was one of the only black American students at the school in 1928. Click on the images for more resolution.

By the way, do we have any Vintage Seattle readers living in the QAHS condos? If so, how is it?

I found this site by doing a google search on Custer Chappell. I grew up in Seattle and married Custer’s nephew. Sadly the marriage didn’t last but we had a beautiful son and now have 4 gorgeous grandchildren. I still stay in touch with my ex and his family and Custer’s brother still lives up in the Madronna area. I have been working on a family history to share with all my siblings, children and grandchildren and just started on the Chappell side of the tree. I thought a google search would give me something figuring how the heck many Custer Chappell’s are there out there. This site came up 2nd in the list and I found this great photo of Custer. Amazing family resemblance too!

On top of that your blog is wonderful and brings back a lot of memories for me of growing up in Seattle (down by the original Red Robin back when it was really FUNKY. Love your site!

I recently came across a year book dating back from 1928 with many autographs, not sure who’s book it is but found it interesting

I happen to have a vintage Graduation card with the envelope and an ‘insert” that reads .. “Queen Ann High School Graduating Excercises Masonic Temple
    June 13, 1928 Eight P.M.”

I am selling it for $10 if anyone is interested :-)
