Player O The Week: Jim Beattie 1981

June 1st, 2008 @ 1:10 am by Cliffe | Sorted Old Sportborder
To break this season’s curse I think the Mariners need to bring back the 1980’s button-up shiny jacket. Once you check out this 1981 Jim Beattie card from Topps, you’ll see what I mean. With that said, Jim Beattie is our Vintage Seattle Player O The Week. In ‘82 he pitched 19 consecutive scoreless innings and threw the first M’s one hitter in ‘83. After hanging up the shiny jacket, Beattie went on to serve as Director of Player Development for the Mariners (1990-1995), was GM of the Expos (1995-2001), and acted as Executive VP of the Baltimore Orioles (2003-2005). Not bad for an ex-jock with a University of Washington M.B.A.

I remember seeing and talking with Jim Beattie in the HUB when I was a grad student at the U.W. Standing beside him made me realize that unlike Football players, baseball players are “human” sized. He was a really nice unassuming guy.

Talking about how people can do different things and go different places in one’s life! I first remember Jim and his older brother George when they grew up with their parents a couple streets over from Lincoln elementary school (South Portland , Maine) and where I was 4 grades behind Jim and 6 behind George…They ran summer sports programs for the city and had us over for pizza, italian sandwishes, his moms lunches and of course over to watch games…. At that time I watched them perform, play the sports and they were the big brothers that I never had….then on to South Portland High where they of course excelled and when graduated…. and left for college( and excelled) they might have come back to watch games but I’m sure they didn’t know who I was but should have because I am the one they tutored, taught, coached and played with years ago…

Yes I was an All-State Football player for South Portland and Ed MacIlany(pro CFL lineman) used to come back and watch us and go to the State Championship Game in Portland’s frozen tundra and lost to Bangor 8-0… It was at least 20 below and the wind was honking!!! Yes I made the varsity basketball team as a soph, junior and under used to beat up the starters in practice…You may not care about this blog entry but 10-15 years later I played thousands of pick up games with Larry( older brother) and Michael Jordan all over Wilmington, NC…I showed them a move or 20 and used to drag their butts up and down the court…When Jim played for the Yankees I had wished he was a Bosox but good for Jim anyway and heard he was an exec( Mariners, Expos and O’s and wished I could have had a job with a pro club…Only thing I have more of is more hair then Jim and don’t know about George…

PS I played indian ball, farm, little league and babe ruth, legion ball…Well the last 15 years I’ve been a professional fishing guide that fished from Maine to Mexico and also Merchant Marine Officer and a USCG Licensed 100 ton Captain…. and won’t get fired, let go, put on waivers, opted out, have a shoulder repair ending my career and hope that the fish supply never ends!!!
