The Scottish Rite Cathedral, which I assume stood facing this way (based on the grade). So what happened to it? Alan? Click for higher resolution.

There was a Scottish Rite Temple at 1155 Broadway Ave E., near E. Highland Drive, until about 2006…torn down to build some condos (I know, it’s shocking…what are the chances?). I think the address placing it near Madison may be an error (1155 Broadway Ave takes you there on Google maps…)

Looks like the original temple would have been on that triangle of land between Broadway and Harvard just south of where the Polyclinic is now (across the street from Garage). ChrisA is correct that a later 1960’s looking era temple was further north on Harvard and Highland just west of Broadway — used to walk by that when I lived in that neighborhood. As can be seen on Google it is now a construction site for condos complete with a crane that can be easily seen from I-5 towering above Capitol Hill just south of St. Marks.

From what little I know, the Scottish Rite Temple that was at 1155 Broadway E was built around the time of the World’s Fair. I assume that this when when the Seattle Scottish Rite moved from the building in the postcard to that location, which may imply when the building in the postcard was torn down.
On Flickr, you can find a few pics of the 1155 building before it was torn down. It was designed by NBBJ, but was pretty beat-up by the time it was demolished.

I remember a derelict Scottish Rite building on this site in the 1970’s; I believe it was fenced off and vacant. A friend of mine in a drunken spree broke into it once, and just spoke of dusty rooms and a few chairs. It would have been torn down to accommodate the Polyclinic maybe?

Bryan: Ya, posted an image of it today.

There was a dance club in the late 80’s right around here called “Club Broadway” that I think was torn down in the early 90’s to build the Polyclinic. Perhaps that was a different building than this Scottish Rite building. I wonder what the address was of this old building? Maybe they were next to each other…

That building was converted to a private home. Its gorgeous.
