Ivar’s Acres Of Clams

This interesting article about Ivar Haglund’s house cropped up on West Seattle Blog the other day. Looks like it is going to be used for fire department training before being demolished (see training videos here). Check out the comment from Paul Dorpat — he mentions that Woodie Guthrie and Pete Seeger spent time there in the early 40′s. It seems Ivar was a colorful man. Here’s an old photo I dug up from my archives of Ivar’s down on the waterfront. Modern day view is here. No date on this one. Click for higher res.

Yes, I have O.C.D. Yes, the last thing this blog needs is yet more photos of the Space Needle. Yes, here are two more color shots of the Needle from 1962. Yes, it only takes one person to take a photo (dunno). Click for high res.

The Americana Towne Motel is still going strong today, as you can see. It’s now a Days Inn with a new roof structure and front addition. The groovy 1960′s color scheme has been replaced with a boring beiege. When are the Days Inn and Space Needle going to bring those colors back? Click for higher res. Long live Americana Towne Motel.

Big Plans: Space Needle Concept

I’m in the process of choosing some early 60′s concept sketches of the Needle to frame for the house. This is one of them. I may have to find a custom frame solution for it — surely it’s criminal to crop. Click for higher res.

Past Post: Shaw’s Pharmacy

Past Post today is showing a turn of the century Shaw’s Pharmacy interior. Perhaps one of our readers from the library staff can look up where this was located. The author writes:
Dear friends, We got home safely, and papa got our telegram in time to meet us. We just managed to catch that 4:30 train from Portland. Wasn’t it lucky? Our trunks did not come for a whole weekend and one of them was all smashed to pieces. They think that they were in a wreck. But nothing was lost or damaged so it is all right. I have made up most of my school work. How do you feel after your trip? W. Shaw.

Today’s photo exposure shows 5th and Westlake. I don’t have a date on this one — who can piece it together based on clues from the photo? I’ll start with an easy one. There’s The Orpheum so it must be pre-1967. Modern day view is here. Click for higher res.

They don’t build ‘em like they used to and they also don’t word ‘em like they used to. This 1968 photo shows 133 14th Ave East on Capitol Hill. The Queen Anne style home, built in 1894, still stands and now houses David Weatherford Antiques. Click for higher res. By the way, I’m back in the U.S.A. and enjoying drinkable tap water and even the rain.

A nice simple Holiday Inn painting ad from the 60′s, most likely. The address puts this one somewhere around the current Home Depot site.

Once again, I cannot stay away from the corner of 2nd and Pine. Just a quick update to the original Washed Into The Bay post, this time the photo from a year later in 1907. The original Washington Hotel is now gone, the streets graded, and a number of new buildings just about ready for business. There’s another view of the corner here from 1909. Click here for a modern day bird’s eye.
| Progress Of Seattle. The same district as shown on opposite page. The hill has been removed, streets graded and paved, Washington Hotel Annex and smaller buildings completed and occupied, New Washington Hotel, Moore Theatre, Standard Furniture and other buildings nearly ready for occupancy.
