Dear friends, We got home safely, and papa got our telegram in time to meet us. We just managed to catch that 4:30 train from Portland. Wasn’t it lucky? Our trunks did not come for a whole weekend and one of them was all smashed to pieces. They think th at they were in a wreck. But nothing was lost or damaged so it is all right. I have made up most of my school work. How do you feel after your trip? W. Shaw.

Well, I give up. I can’t find a Polk directory online to save my life, at least from this time period. I found a 1923 one, but Shaw’s Pharmacy is not in it. I think a reader of this site does have one, as I recall him/her using one to find an address before.
According to the 1907 city directory, Shaw’s Pharmacy was located at 918 Second Avenue.
That would put it smartly in the old Burke Building, the front arch of which still stands outside the Fed Building now occupying that spot, no?

If anyone had a way of searching for photos of Turrell Shoes or some other company listed as occupying this building, one might be able to compare the pillars with those in the photo above. (Just an idea…weekend anyone?)
No, wait… that’s the wrong side of the street. It would have been across the street from the Burke Building. Yup. Sorry.
nevermind! according to 1905 maps, 918 2nd Ave. was in a 1 story brick building at the southeast corner of 2nd and Madison. I guess that’s where the Wells Fargo Tower is now.
