If nothing else, these old postcards can be used in place of a baby name book. Buford Sandquist. If your last name just happens to be Sandquist, then I think your next child just found it’s name. The other nice thing about the postcards is that you get to find out more about the state you live in. As of 2009 Silvana, Washington had a land area of 1.5 squ are miles
and a population of 97.
I guess Buford’s small town stayed that way. And finally, hey it’s our first erotic postcard find! Contain your excitement, people.
It reads:
Seattle, Wn. Apr. 4. 09. Dear Buford: Tomorrow is your birthday and I wish I were there to whip you.
Hoping you are well and a good boy. Don’t forget to visit us soon.
With Love, Newton.

Isn’t it Union Bay of Lake Washington, and not Lake Union itself that would be the water in the foreground of that perspective?
Or was Lake Union – the Montlake Cut – Lake Washington configured differently in that area in 1909?
Julie Anne,
The way I read it, I put the viewer at about the south end of the current I-5 bridge, maybe a little eastward. You can see Denny Hall up on higher ground, and the colonnaded Expo stuff down (SE-ward) to the right, so that this view is not looking across Union Bay but rather across the channel between Portage Bay and Lake Uniion. I could be all wet, though.
…so the caption on the card isn’t exactly wrong, just a little misleading.
OK…yeah, I see what you’re saying.
It’s so hard to compare perspective when landmarks that have existed for one’s entire existence aren’t there.
My first thought was that you wouldn’t have been able to see the Alaska-Yukon Expo grounds from Portage Bay, but then, again, why not? Just because I can’t see it now from there – the currnt view is blocked by buildings, not topography.
Thanks, Matt!
Hi! I just discovered this page after trying to search for the Sandquist name and Silvana on Google. Buford,
(or Buford Roland Nicholas Sandquist) was my Great Uncle; we called him Uncle Pat! What fun to add to my memories of this quiet man. I was also pleased to know that they were in Silvana during that time….I hadn’t been able to find evidence that they lived there during those years.
