On The Horizon House 1966

Oh no, not another one of those “things ain’t what they used to be” posts. Afraid so. In the first half of the 20th century you’d find postcards of the monumental Smith Tower and breathtaking Mount Rainier in background. By 1966 we turned to the Horizon House, whose glory was in name only. Horizon House fans, tell me I’m a jerk — I’ll admit that it was a cheap shot. Click for higher res.

Bizarre, but I suppose those were custom-produced for distribution by Horizon House itself to its residents? I can’t imagine many of these would have been bought by the general public.

Oh, sure, that has to be it. You still find hotels that give away postcards of their specific building on them. This is one of them.

I worked at Horizon House for several years, starting about ten years after this card was sent. The residents were very nice, a high percentage of them retired teachers.
From what I’ve heard it started out as a rather high class apartment building before converting into a retirement condo.
In this picture you can just see the Lolita immediately to the east, a charming three story plus basement apartment building where I lived for about a year in the Seventies. It was removed when Horizon House expanded in the Eighties, more than doubling it’s size.
