I grew up on QA hill, the Blethen home was at 519 W. Highland Drive looking south, east of Kerry Park. The house is not there any longer. The trees are still there as mentioned. My childhood dog loved the tree closest to the corner of 6th and Highland and decorated it on every walk we took going that way.

The Ballard Howe home is at 22 West Highland, it is divided into apartments. I had a friend who lived there in the mid 1970's to about the mid 1980's.

Touched up photo for sure, no way Rainier looked like that from the location of the house.

I'm not so sure. 22 W. Highland Drive is on the North side of the street and is referred to as the Ballard Howe residence. The back side of this home doesn't really have a view.

Clearly a painting. The light would be different and if you could see Raindog that well, you'd see neighboring smaller peaks and foothills too. Don't be fooled by the faux fog. :P

Oh, I believe that Mt. Rainier was probably in that area, but I don't think it was that clearly visible and tidy looking! It's a documented fact that Mt. Rainier was oftentimes painted into the backdrop of old Seattle photos when it didn't show up on the photo due to poor visibility. This looks like one of those photos. :)

I believe the Google street view at Highland and 6thW shows the same young Chestnut trees in this shot, now enormous, a hundred years later.

The Dept. of Neighborhoods lists the Blethen address at 519 W. Highland, which concurs with this view to the south.

Is this one of those many old photos in which Mt. Rainier was just slapped on in the background? I love those.
