Ever walk by an empty parking lot and wonder what history the site held? Well, if you’re like me then you’ve walked by
this empty parking lot many times. Though it has since been developed, it once housed Broadway’s First Christian Church. The structure was damaged during the 2001 Nisqually earthquake and the high cost of repair meant the church was sold and demolished in 2005. Here’s a
photo set of the demolition. Click on the thumbnail for higher res.

Actually, it hasn’t been a vacant lot for quite a while.

This and the formerly longer existing parking lot to the south of it have been an active construction site for awhile now. For what I have heard it is a Seattle Central owned or related project to build apartment housing, presumably for students, which surprised me a bit that community colleges are involved in student housing.
It was unfortunate that the previous church building could not have been purchased and turned into another use since the congregation could not afford it (they merged with another Capitol Hill church). It seemed more odd considering that it was during heady days of real estate boom.

Hey there, thanks for the link to my photoset! I’ve just dug back through my archives, found the video files mentioned in the set description, and uploaded them [to YouTube][1]. A little bit more for the archives!

Also, [here' s my blog post][1] from when I first posted the photoset and video, with a little more information about the demolition, including a link to [this page][2] with a few shots from the company who removed the stained glass windows across the façade.
