comes through again on the menu front. This time he’s sent us scans of a Rubenak’s Half-Way House souvenir menu. The Restaurant was halfway between Seattle and Everett on Highway 99 (which was once called Pacific Highway 1). This is a really nice find — just check out that racy cover.

“Chicken livers can be substituted on any dinner” is something you don’t see anymore! Nor is Ovaltine on modern menus. What was the big deal about Ovaltine anyway?

  2. I think the image of the dining couple on the front speaks volumes about the mores and travails of earlier times. He positioned for best view of the show, she with back to the stage, perhaps disappointed that an engaged conversation with her dining partner is apparently “not on” for this evening, and disdainful at the distraction in the large martini glass.

@Shannon, I think the big deal about Ovaltine was genius marketing during the radio days.

That lawyer joke was pretty good. ;)

25 cents for a sandwich WITH chips!? *curse words*!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. REALLY COOL! This place was operated by my Great-Grandparents back in the 30′s & 40′s. Our name is ‘RubenaCk’ but the story goes that as they were making the sign, they ran out of room as they were making it and decided to drop the ‘c’. It was kind of a notorious place with a madame occupying 1/2 the rooms of the motel with some of her ‘Working girls’ living there. Law enforcement seemed to frequent the place. My great aunt told me they used to have a topless night club or something like that at night. Somewhere my Dad has another one of these menus we received from my Great aunt whle visiting her a few years back before she passed away. I really appreciate whoever posted this and if they have more, please contact me to let me know. Our family is small is size and we are dedicated to preserving our history. This is a great find! Thanks! -Todd Rubenack, Corona, CA.
