Seattle’s only over-water hotel, The Edgewater on Pier 67, opened in 1963. Over the years this famous hotel (originally named Camelot) has hosted The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Frank Zappa, Led Zeppelin, among others. Speaking of Led Zep, check out the Wikipedia entry on The Shark Episode — I had not heard this bit of rock-n-roll lore before. Check out the 60′ s era shot from Max R. Jensen.
Sex & Fish & Rock’n'Roll! I was only familiar with the raunchy rendition of the mudshark (dogfish) story by the Fluorescent Leech & Eddie (formerly The Turtles) on the ’71 Mothers’ album. The Wiki link provides TMI on the subject! What a legacy!
Yeah, that mudshark story is legendary. The urban myth that follows the final visit of Led Zeppelin in 1973 is that the hotel banned all guests from fishing from the windows afterwards. I have no idea if that is true or not, but I do know that you used to be able to fish out of the windows!
“Bobby. Jimmy. John Paul. This is why we can’t have nice things.”
That story is….. thought provoking…….
The postcard is also thought provoking.
gimme an “E”!….
Wow. I had no idea! The only Edgewater related rock lore I know is that when Elvis Presley came to stay at the Inn he though the ‘E’ was in reference to himself.
Mudsharks and fish aside, another point forgotten was that for many years the pre KWJZ forrunner, KEZX used to have studios in the building… As I recall in the little concrete bunker furthest in from the pier… I also seem to remember their slogan at the time was, “Oceans of Beautful Music” for “E-Z” listening…
The gift shop sells post cards of a photo of the Beatles fishing out of one of the windows. They used to have fishing poles in each room and allowed guests to fish out of the windows. That stopped after too many incidents of fish being found in the beds .. haha
