World’s Fair Candids Pt. 2
August 11th, 2009 @ 12:23 am by Cliffe | Sorted Photo Exposure |
Today we’re proceeding with Part 2 of the World’s Fair Candids photo collection. These shots were found by Chris Arena while cleaning out a vacant house and he’s gone ahead and sent them in for our perusal. Click here for Part 1 if you missed it yesterday. This batch even features everyone’s favorite World’s Fair fixture: The Bubbleator. Speaking of which, this page tells the story of “where is it now.” Helping orchids grow, apparently. Click on the photos for higher res. Thanks again Chris!
THE BUBBLEATOR!!!
now THAT’s travelin’ 21st Century Style… If you bring back the bubbleator, I won’t ask where are the anti gravety cars…
Tightrope walkers over the stadium!
Great pictures, love the vintage space needle images.
lovely. I have a vintage shot to share — this was snapped of my grandmother when my grandfather was the Grand Potentate of Seattle’s Nile Temple in the ’60s and they had an event at the Space Needle. This was shot at the Science Center down below (crossing my fingers that you’ll accept an href):

@ Seattle Greg – The Bubbleator for the past 25 years or so has been living in retirement as a greenhouse, I believe in Des Moines…it’s just wrong I tells ya…enviromentally friendly, but wrong…
Yep… still there as of two years ago…

but then again, it was the Bubbleator OPERATORS that made it great… and the very Star Trek operations stand they stood on I believe is now with MOHI…
but yeah… at 7, I LOVED those lovely ladies in uniform… just had no clue as to WHY…
That article was 2002… than the saga continues, with an ironic twist involving yet another famous ball… the PI…

I have to admit it does look cool in his front yard. I wonder what will become of the P-I globe? I imagine it will stick around for as long as the P-I is still publishing online…then probably wind up at the MOHAI..
In the picture of the Key arena, I can see the A&P where my mom shopped. It is gone now, there is another market there now, not the same bldg. I looked for the A&P as a landmark of childhood on a trip to Seattle a few years ago. I knew it was gone, but my sister and I discussed the building that stands there now. She thought it was the same bldg, but I knew different. In fact we stayed at the Inn at Queen Anne, right across 1st ave. Its in the picture too.
sigh*
Nostalgia.
There was a short story on NPR’s Selected Shorts about Plexiglas greenhouse bubbles becoming a fad, which were replaced by bubbles covering entire houses, then neighborhoods, and eventually countries with plans for the world. I wonder if this inspired that story.
some of the best worlds fair shots I have seen. Really tells a story.
My sister Lisa and I rode in the Bubbleator when we were small.
Until this day I can remember the wonder and magic of traveling
in a giant bubble ! We were secretly afraid it would pop !
Yet we were happy when we landed safely…
Although in my memory the Bubbleator was all pink and glowing !
One must get over their fear to travel in a sphere
Yet to be an imaginatif creator is to sail away in a Bubbleator !
We’ll sail away in a Bubble to a land where there is no trouble
Like the birds flying above we live in a World of Love
We thank you for the happy memories…
