Goin’ Downtown

Here’s another fine 1960′s era shot looking south from the Space Needle. There are some nice shots of vintage hotel signage as well as a classic Coca-Cola painted brick.

Downtown Seattle looking south from the gift shop window of the Space Needle, 550 above the city. At the lower left can be seen the double tracts of the Monorail which terminates in the heart of the business district. Color photo by Max R. Jensen.

Blown up in High Res you can spot some fun gems… lower right corner, Bergman Luggage sign. or the New Washington Hotel sign, or the Ben Franklin Hotel sign (where the Westin corncobs now stand). And the back side of one of my favorite neons, the GN Rocky Goat that marked the end of 4th Ave heading north in town…

You forget how big the WAC is in today’s forest of skyrise, but in the mid 60′s, still a formable tower middle height and 2/3 rds left side…

That’s the first time I’ve ever seen the BINYON 444 sign before. I dig it. Was that a giant clock or an address?

I never noticed that Binyon sign either. I think it was a clock and belonged to Binyon Eyecare at 1905 4th Ave. Pretty cool.

444 is a clock. It was 4:44 in the afternoon
