Even though there’s still some debate over
Wednesday’s Third & Cherry post, let us move on. Move on, or actually move back, to 1909. This vintage postcard shows the interior of the New Washington Hotel — the “no women allowed” sign must be out of frame. If there are those braver than I who dare transcribe, please feel free in the comments. Click for higher res.

With punctuation added:
Well John, I spend Xmas, very nice.
I was invited out for dinner and certainly? had a good time.
We had turkey, beer, wine and lots of other good stuff.
I eat and drank so much that I wasn’t hardly able to walk home.
The weather here is also a little cold.
?? I went to work this morning but work ?? contract,
is not so plentiful here.
There seems to be lots of them looking.
Yours, JA Peters

Apparently women were at least permitted upstairs. There’s one at the far right (in the white blouse).

You got it all, Morfydd. I think the ?? are “The weather here is also a little cold but I went to work this morning, but work of contract is not so plentiful here.” I think this is maybe an English-as-second-language postcard from a Norwegian–just taking a stab due to the name and time period.

The interior lobby onyx is a perfect match to the Moore Theater … obviously from the same quarrey. I was not aware of any rule concerning women, but the Moore Theater originally had a side entrance to the upper balcony that was intended for
“Non-White” patrons… I am not sure how enforced the rule was.

Why are several gentlemen wearing their hats indoors? Tsk! I thought that was considered bad manners!

Interesting to find your blog. I lived in Seattle 50 years ago and will be moving back shortly. I collect historic postcards.
