Woodland Park Menagerie

One of Woodland Park Zoo’s modern day “menageries,” Nocturnal House, is closing soon. If you want to see sloths, bats, and armadillos like I do then you’d better hit the zoo rather quickly. The Times story was a reminder that I hadn’t been to the zoo in a while and would like to. I was thinking Spring when the weather gets a little warmer but I really, really need to see those sloths. Check out the turn of the century postcard from Woodland Park. Click for the high res and I’ll see you at the sloths.

We can be glad that these are gone! I’m not an animal rights wacko, mind you, but these structures were more like animal jails. They were around maybe into the ’70s (or later), and they were awful. Of course, even the attractive, well-landscaped zoo exhibit is a jail of sorts. But if we’re going to place animals on display, they’re better off, for example, with having more than a few feet of concrete to wander. That aside, it’s a great card. Probably handcolored?

I agree with Anon. The only dangerous animals in this scene are the ones outside of the cages. Thank goodness for the development of wildlife parks and those zoos with more natural habitats.
