  1. Searching for Ivars and Broadway turns up some hits suggesting there was one at Broadway and Thomas, where WaMu/Chase is now – which appears to match this location: the apartment building in the background seems to be the Casa del Rey. The house in the center-left is also still standing.

See this article for photo taken from Ivars looking in the opposite direction, towards Ernie’s (now Julia’s):

  2. E. O. Pederson says:

Definitely on Broadway. Was in business until at least the mid-60S.

  3. Louis says:

I lived on Capitol Hill for most of the 80´s, and I remember going to a seafood restaurant that was located on the corner of Broadway and something-something (Past Dick´s heading south). It looked very similar to this place. Sea Galley maybe? They had all-you-can eat shrimp.

  4. GAM says:

That looks to be where the old WaMu (now Chase) branch is at Broadway & E Thomas.

  5. Geoff says:

The brick building in the background still exists.

  6. Allan says:

A sign in the window says “Chinese Food”. When did Ivar’s serve Chinese food? Did Ivar give it an Icelandic twist?

  7. Patrick says:

Although I don’t remember Ivar’s being there, with the other photo mentioned by Brendan copyrighted Ivar’s restaurants looks right on the map. It is the Casa Del Rey apartments for sure. Louis wrote about a Seafood restuarant, there was The Sizzler (Brick building demolished last year, now a fenced in asphalt lot) next door to King’s Teriyaki and Peet’s Coffee that had all you can eat shrimp, went there many times, later became Chang’s Mongolian Grill. There also was a Skipper’s (Seafood chain restaurant, now defunct, I believe) That was where Roma Thai food is now. Anybody tired of Thai restaurants and Pho yet?

    Allen…
You have not LIVED until you tried the Lutefist Chow Main? Fusion cooking WAY ahead of its time… ; )

  9. Jesse says:

Definitely Broadway and Thomas. I used to live just a few blocks from that building, which is still standing. But I thought Dick’s had been in that location forever.

  10. Catherine Hillenbrand says:

this photo and the Ivars predate my arrival in Seattle 40 years ago. It’s the corner of Broadway and Thomas (?), where the WAMU now Chase branch is on Broadway.I don’t remember there being an ivars at that location in 1969.

  11. Kirsten says:

This Ivar’s was on the corner of Broadway and East Thomas. Originally Ivar wanted a Seafood Bar here but he decided to have Chinese food as well. That seemed like such a good idea, why not add Mexican food too? Three styles of food and one drive in.

The Grand Opening was in 1951 with a Chop Suey eating contest. Leave it to Ivar!

Wasn’t there another Ivar’s drive in at the foot of Denny Way, just down from the Blue Line Room, the Seattle School of Mixology, and the Ron Bailie School of Broadcasting. I think it was at 2nd Ave.
