Past Post: Seattle Library 1910 & 1914

We’ve previously lamented the loss of the 1906 Seattle Public Library, so let’s concentrate on happier times. These cards from 1910 and 1914 show the Beaux-Arts beauty designed by Peter J. Weber. Click for the high res and only check out the demo shots if you’ve got a box of tissues and a 40 ounce nearby.
That is one thing I hate about Seattle. Now that I’m living in Boston and see all the wonderful old buildings. I think it is terrible that Seattle tears down it’s old buildings and then erects not so pretty ones in their space. It makes me appreciate how Boston handles it’s architecture and preserves what it does have. Another prime example is the old church that used to be across from SCCC on Cap. Hill. It is sad that beautiful old building was torn down to put in a parking lot. Very sad.
Right, We’ve lost our original post office, our library, most of our theaters, some of our most prominent schools, and almost everything built before 1900 outside of Pioneer Square. Don’t forget the Burke Building, Occidental, Olympic, and the Warshal’s buildings. Also, the entire block of 1st Ave. north of Pioneer Square.
And now, most of Broadway for that light rail station.
We Suck!
I also find the number of beautiful buildings razed in Seattle and replaced by boring but functional designs, as is the case with the downtown post office. When visiting larger cities on the East Coast and Europe with much of the historical fabric intact it makes me want to start a support group back home.
It is the best time to make some plans for the future and it’s time to be happy. I’ve read this post and if I could I want to suggest you few interesting things or suggestions. Perhaps you could write next articles referring to this article. I desire to read even more things about it!
