E.O. Pederson: I asked Max R. Jensen about dating his shots and postcards and he told me he didn't know of a way to decode the numbers on the back to get a certain date.

That black&white car middle-left is the newest in this photo. A 1956 Ford.

I noticed the freshly planted trees - but also the grease that had already collected in the parking spaces! Dirtier cars back then. Or was the lot open a long time before the plantings were put in? Seems unlikely.

Much ado about parking lots in those days, photographically speaking. Fun for the car enthusiasts here, but I get the sense that people were really excited by the sight of so much space for automobiles.

There is a 55 or 56 Ford in the parking lot, that is the newest that I see.

I would say the same thing based not on the cars, but on the landscaping. The trees have only just been slotted in, and the peripheral treatments (at the edges of the parking surface) look unfinished--no turf or bark at all.

The cars in the parking lot suggest the photo was taken not long after the Laurelhurst hospital opened, perhaps about 1955. There is at least one 1954-5 model Chevrolet or Pontiac in the picture along with a circa 1964 model Ford. Is there a Jensen archive somewhere? If so, more exact dates could probably be ascertained.
