Tilt-Shifting Downtown Seattle 1983

Tuesday we posted this 1966 shot of the Space Needle and today we pull back the frame and advance through the years to 1983. Thanks to Jesse Berg for sending in this beautiful shot taken by his father from the roof of a condo construction site on Queen Anne Hill. If anyone reading this has shots tucked away in a shoe box somewhere, do send them in. Click for the high res copy.
Is that the skeleton of the Columbia Tower going up under cranes? A friend and I used to take a picture every year from Admiral Way in West Seattle, from 82 through the turn of the century. In the second year’s photo (1983), the Columbia Tower suddenly appears in construction in the background, raising the height of the skyline by a third.
Maybe it’s me.. but this looks more like it was taken from capitol hill area with the location of the Space Needle compared to downtown. Curious as to where in Queen Anne this would have been taken. Any thoughts?
The angle of the Darth Vader Building’s face confirms a Queen Anne location. I put the vantage point somewhere on the east slope toward Aurora.
Ahhh okay, that makes sense. I’m more familiar with the west side views.
Without all the Starbucks locations it’s hard to orient oneself. It’s like a moonscape out there.
The building in the foreground right appears to be the one at the corner of Taylor Ave N and Lee St, so this is probably taken from the building to the North of that, looking due South.
How come the foreground looks like Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood? Is this a photo of a photo? I guess the edges curled up. I feel like I need to reach for my canvas boat shoes and my cardigan sweater.
That is Columbia Center going up under the cranes, Matt.
