Jensen’s life’s work that he recently left behind. To say that he exhaustively documented the city of Seattle and surround area is an understatement, as this Battery Street tunnel shot illustrates.

Ah, the Denny exit from Aurora that I take every weekday morning of my commute! Just behind that rather awesome large old Seattle First Bank sign is the old P-I Building–the globe on top must just be out of the scene or else not lit up.

  2. And shouldn’t I be seeing the Pink Elephant Car Wash dead center here?

  3. TomK says:

Apparently the writer of the copy for the photo caption was not aware that it’s “Alaskan Way”, not “Alaska Way”.

  4. E. O. Pederson says:

Are the Jensen images dated? He lived a long time and photographed the city as it changed, so it would be enjoyable to know the dates specific shots were taken. Having been through the Aurora tunnel countless times from 1950 to the present, rummaging through my memory I cannot remember the bank sign shown, and there are few other clues to the date of the picture of the tunnel entrance.

  5. Cliffe says:

E.O.: Sadly, no they are not dated. I specifically asked Max about this and he said there was no way to tell the date from the postcard fine print.

I can’t tell if the Pink Elephant is there, but just not lit up (although I’d assume that since the bank sign is lit, the Elephant would’ve been too if it was there). If the Elephant’s not there yet, that would date the picture in the ’54-’56 window
