I don’t agree with the modern view. The street is too narrow. The street we need to match is six lanes with parking – and on a slight incline. I’m wondering about Broad St., perhaps at 2nd?

I question the 1966 date based on the license plate on the old Chrysler on the right. That white-on-green plate is from before 1963, when the plates changed to green-on-white. There are no cars in the picture newer than 1960 or so.

After checking Google Street View, I concur with the Broad Street at 2nd Ave. theory. The cross-street in the original picture is a one-way street, which Thomas Street definitely is not. 2nd however is a one-way street. Unfortunately, I don’t think any of the buildings in the picture survive for verification purposes.

Oops, I meant to say 6th Ave N isn’t one-way, not Thomas St.

Well, it would have to be before 1962…. :)

Aw, dang it, I meant 1962 (or AFTER)!

When did paint scheme “Reentry Red” and “Galaxy Gold” go away?

  7. Jana says:

What’s the dome looking thing visible under the traffic light?

  8. jim civarra says:

KB is right. It would almost have to have been 1962 or maybe 1963.

  9. jim civarra says:

To Jana: the dome visible under the traffic light is, I think, the domed Ford Building from the World’s Fair. That would seem to confirm my suspicion that the picture was taken while the Fair was open or shortly thereafter.

  10. I agree that this view is taken from the south side of Broad between First and Second. Besides the textual evidence Alan has found, there is a 1969 dataset on Historic Aerials that shows the proper arrangement of buildings and parking lots looking up Broad, plus you can make out the little overhang on the MEBA building.

Good eyes on the license plate. This is the real clue to this picture.

check this…and you will see white on green ended in ’62. Green on white started in ’63.
