I think I prefer the girls striking poses to the DEAD END sign, don’t you? Click here for the modern day view. Actually, don’t.

At least they removed the overhead power lines in the current photo.

While the lack of power lines is aesthetically pleasing, I wonder if their removal helped to dead-end that road. According to the quarter section map, there’s still a 12-foot wide public right-of-way where those power lines ran, from where this photo was taken at 55th Ave on down to Sand Point Way. I can just see these girls—or their brothers—walking down this alley and across the railroad tracks to watch planes take off at Sand Point.

I imagine once the poles and lines were gone removed, the utility company no longer needed to keep the ROW clear for access, and there wasn’t anything to remind passersby that the ROW was public land. So the adjacent property owners, who treat the alley like a private driveway, started putting up fences. And what once was a public through route became a dead end.

  3. Ben Lukoff says:

If that’s true, those fences should be taken down.

  4. Andreas says:

I randomly stumbled upon the other photos in this set tonight, and they shed some light on the ROW matter. Ownership aside, it looks like the road was never navigable by auto much farther than this point—but there definitely was a footpath that I think is blocked by fences today.

This photo appears to be taken from just a little ways past the girls, looking back up the hill. The girl in the black pants even appears to be standing at the top of the alley.

Even more fun (for me, at least), are this photo and this one, showing how the footpath definitely seemed to continue down towards the airfield. A kid could’ve had some serious fun rambling along that trail.

This area is not far from where I grew up, and despite the “today” photo, is still one of the most desirable neighborhoods, and expensive, in the city.

  6. Today, while I was at work, my sister stole my apple ipad and tested to see if it can survive a 25 foot drop, just so she can be a youtube sensation. My iPad is now broken and she has 83 views. I know this is totally off topic but I had to share it with someone!| flight deals india http://www.funtraveldeals.com/book-flights/
