The other high buildings are: the circular Washington Plaza Hotel, the 50 story Seattle-First National Bank Building, and the “Plaza 600″ Office Building. The majestic mountain in the distance is Mt. Rainier — 60 miles away. Color photo by Max R. Jensen.

SeaFirst is complete, while Plaza 600 is under construction (to left of photo): puts this at 1969. Both these are listed as being completed in ’69; with Seafirst complete during the early part of the year, feb/mar.

  2. Judging from the amount of snow on the mountain and the fact that the flag on the center pole of the Northern Life/Seattle Tower building is being blown from the north or east, I’d say this was a chilly day in early Spring. Further examining shadow detail, I’m going to say 4:58 PM, April 12, 1969. I say all this authoritatively, even casually, as though I know what I’m talking about.

Matt, there’s way too much light in this shot for the late afternoon in midApril. It’s 2:14:46 PM, no doubt about it.
Fine shot it is, but am I the only local tired of that vantage point? We have other stunning views.

This doesn’t appear to be the usual Kerry Park shot though: from Kerry Park, the needle is usually to the left of the SeaFirst tower; and Yamasaki’s PacSci arches are just about below the mountain. This would appear to be from a few blocks to the East of that viewpoint.

It’s possible that the photo was taken later in the spring. The winter of 68-69 was a very bad one. There was snow on the ground continuously for a month or more, and I’m guessing the snow pack hung around longer that spring, too.

I’m going to go with 1970. The Sea-First building and Westin look too established for 1969, the year they were topped off.

  7. Today, I went to the beachfront with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone! back pain remedies http://www.causes-for-backpain.com
